The surprising effect is that there is an ideal temperature range in which the drop of water will skip and dance for the longest time. When the frying pan is just above the boiling temperature of water, which is 100C at sea level, the drop of water should boil away fairly quickly. These Leidenfrost drops are ultra-mobile, and we show how they can be manipulated, or trapped. We also describe a device recently invented by Heiner Linke, allowing them to self-propel along their substrate. More generally, it is found that these frictionless systems are good tools for studying the mechanics of interfaces.
